Swim Lesson Information

Elmwood Fitness Center offers swim lessons on a year round basis. All of Elmwood’s aquatic instructors are Water Safety Instructor Certified by the American Red Cross, and have an extensive background in competitive swimming. Our program has a child appropriate teaching philosophy and recommends that parents view all classes. Our swim lesson program is available year round for children, members and non-members.

Our goals for the Ochsner Fitness Swim Lessons are as follows:

  1. To aid the child in overcoming their fear of the water.
  2. To teach basic “water safety” skills as well as the knowledge to make each child safe while in; on; or around the water.
  3. To have fun and enjoy themselves while in; on; or around water.
  4. Further enjoyment after the child’s initial introduction to the water has been achieved.
  5. To instruct the child in (a) proper body alignment; (b) to keep head in the water while swimming; (c) proper breathing techniques with the face in the water while swimming.
  6. To teach the four basic competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly).
  7. To develop the child’s endurance in order for them to swim the length of the Elmwood pool (25 yds) of each of the four basic strokes outlined in number six.
  8. Beginning Level Swim Lessons are set up for 3 years and up. There are 3-4 children per instructor. This level is where most students begin. At this age our goal is not to teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive independently in the water. Young children should always be supervised around the water since they are easily scared and confused.

Advanced Level Swim Lessons are set up for children 3 years and up. There are 3-4 children per instructor. This level is for students who need to become more efficient in swimming and learn various stokes. A good deal of time will be spent teaching proper stoke technique and proper breathing.

Competitive Level Swim Lessons are set up for children 3 years and up. There are 6-8 children per instructor. This is the most advanced level of our swim lesson program. Here children will be exposed to the sport of swimming. In addition, this class is designed to promote strong swimming skills that will last a lifetime. We cover the four competitive strokes, focusing on stroke efficiency. This class is a great opportunity for summer league swimmers to sharpen their skills and to stay in shape.

Children’s Swim Lessons

Water Babies

Our Water Babies program is the first step in our Elmwood Fitness Center Swim School. The Water Babies program is designed for children six months to three years of age. This is a water acclimation program where the parent(s) or guardian and child participate in the water with the instructor. This class is not designed to turn your child into a fish, or even to teach them, basics water skills. Our goal for this initial step is simply to provide parents with the appropriate information about water safety and techniques that will aid in making water-adjustment a pleasant experience for the child. This is achieved through the use of games, songs, and laughter in interactive curriculum organized around weekly lesson plans.

2017 Water Babies Schedule

  • All lessons are held on a monthly schedule.
  • Student receives (4), thirty minute lessons per month.

Toddler Swim Lessons

Our Toddler swim lesson is the second step in our swim lesson program. The program is designed for two and thee year old children. This class is designed to work on safety skills and advanced movement in the water. This is done through the introduction to water skills.

The objective of this class is to help the child become comfortable in the water and to enjoy the eater in a safe manner. Students will learn the elementary aquatic skills needed to continue to build on as they progress through the various levels of swim lessons. We allow two to three children per instructor.
